Numerous opportunities

At the end of your 3 years of training, a career in the railway and guided infrastructure sectors is open to you. This might be in actual track construction, but could also relate to maintenance, signalling, power supply, security, surveillance, telecommunications etc. It is a broad spectrum if we also consider service companies such as certification bodies or design offices.

Practical training

This is a work-study course with training at IMT Nord Europe and a host company. You will be monitored by a tutor, a college teacher, who ensures there is an ongoing and formalised relationship between the apprentice and their mentor. The latter, an experienced manager in the company organises your work and monitors it. The content of the assignments and the skills assessment established between you and the company are validated by IMT Nord Europe.

Academic training

The civil engineering and railway systems course gives you the fundamental concepts in scientific, technological as well as human fields. A company work placement enables you to put all this knowledge into practice but also take responsibility or to work as part of a team. This dual teaching approach is particularly effective because you learn applied skills very quickly. It requires a significant amount of individual work, which cultivates a sense of initiative, autonomy and independence.

The teaching 

The teaching for this training covers the entire field of knowledge and skills necessary for a career in civil and railway systems engineering:

  • Management: project management, communication, rail safety – risk management, innovation and creativity, English, etc.
  • Science and technology: mathematics, mechanics, materials science, geology and hydrology, etc.
  • Technology: CAD/CAM, civil engineering and track works, signalling, catenary, etc.

After my civil engineering work-study degree, I wanted to continue studying using this model, with college time and a company work placement. I wanted to apply for engineering training in a growth sector with a lot of executive job opportunities. So I enrolled on the specialised civil engineering and railway systems course at IMT Nord Europe. I am an apprentice at ETF’s North sector agency and I am training for the profession of foreman. It is a predominantly male environment, but I have been able to find my place in it without feeling overwhelmed. If I could give one piece of advice, in particular to all young women who are hesitant about taking the plunge, I would tell them not to be afraid, to do what they want, regardless of the profession or the environment.
